Explore the 1950 Census!

Since 1790, the United States federal government has been taking the census to calculate the distribution of seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. After 70 years, the data transitions from being confidential to publicly available. On April 1st of 2022, the National Archives released the 1950 Census. In recognition of this event, I encourage you to explore the 1950 Census and find friends, family, or even historical figures recorded by it. The website details five tips for searching the 1950 Census. You can even help by transcribing the names of those whose names have been misread by the computer program used to make the census searchable.

The 1950 Census website also makes available various historical artifacts, such as informational and training films, created to educate the public and 1950 Census workers going door-to-door all across the country. For further assistance using this tool, please contact the Business & Government Documents Librarian at UND, Brian Garrison. By the way, the answer to the question where did Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall live in 1950 is 2707 Benedict Canyon Drive, Los Angeles.
