Money-saving student program nears $11 million mark

The University of North Dakota strives to make your student’s education affordable. One way we do this is providing open educational resources such as open-source textbooks and other learning materials and teaching aids that can be easily accessed and distributed.

“Every September, I talk to students who didn’t realize how much their textbooks were going to cost,” said Stephanie Walker, dean of libraries and information resources, who’s been an advocate for open-access resources since the early 2000s. “They might not have $800 more, that month, after paying tuition and rent.”

Student savings have reached almost $11 million thanks to a program that allows faculty to substitute high-quality, but inexpensive, materials for expensive textbooks.
