Grand Forks high school student working with SMHS Epigenetics Working Group wins honors at science fair

Shri Patel, a student at Red River High School, was one of several Grand Forks Public Schools students to take home awards at a statewide science competition last week. Patel’s poster, entitled “Epigenetic Targets in Longevity Control in Drosophila melanogaster (Common Fruit Fly)” won the second-place prize in the senior division sweepstakes. The award is notable for the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences (SMHS) because Patel completed her project in the laboratory of Alexei Tulin, PhD, professor in the SMHS Department of Biomedical Sciences, and with UND’s Epigenetics Working Group using the group’s NSF grant funding. A brief article on the award can be read here (photo courtesy Lorraine O’Shea/Grand Forks Public Schools). Congratulations!
