Faculty development: The 1-minute preceptor and other strategies for busy clinical educators

Join the Teaching, Learning and Scholarship team at noon on Thursday, Dec. 17 for the next Evidence-Based Faculty Development Session: “The 1-minute preceptor and other strategies for busy clinical educators.”

Presenters:

  • Dr. Marc Basson, Senior Associate Dean for Medicine and Research
  • Dr. Richard Van Eck, Associate Dean for Teaching & Learning

Time has always been one of the major challenges for those who provide clinical education while simultaneously doing their own clinical work. COVID has exacerbated those challenges because of increased patient loads and the added burden of telehealth. What is a dedicated but overworked clinical educator to do? To paraphrase Allison Rosset, a well-known performance improvement researcher and instructional designer, “You may not have time to do everything, but you always have time to do SOMETHING.” So, what are a few of those “somethings” we might be able to achieve?

In the first half of this session, Dr. Richard Van Eck will provide an overview of the 1-minute preceptor model, and Dr. Marc Basson will share some practical tips he has used in his own teaching and practice. The rest of the session will be open for discussion to help you solve your own specific needs and share the ideas you have found to be effective.

The event will be streamed live on Dec. 17, 2020, via Zoom and recorded for later viewing. To join the event, visit: https://und.zoom.us/j/8327382880?pwd=ck9nenduaVliTVUvVU1oemxxQ1EzZz09.

This faculty development session is part of the Evidence-Based Teaching (EBT) series hosted by the Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship unit of Education Resources and the Office of Education and Faculty Affairs at the School of Medicine & Health Sciences. This series, held every third Thursday of the month, showcases topics of interest to the medical and health education community and is free and open to anyone at UND. Previous faculty development sessions can be streamed from our website.
