Tyler Linder to Present Thesis Proposal on Oct. 11th

Space Studies master’s student, Tyler Linder, will give his thesis proposal presentation as follows.  All Space Studies students and faculty are encouraged to attend.

When:  Tuesday, October 11th at 12:30 p.m.

Where:  Ryan Hall, Room 111

Title: Spectrophotometry study of asteroids with a variable 1um silicate absorption feature

About the topic: Asteroid observations collected by Sloan Digital Sky Survey suggest that a portion of the main asteroid belt does not have a uniform surface composition from the indication there is a variable 1um silicate absorption feature.  These observations challenge the current understanding and may affect how future visible and near infrared observations are conducted. This research is reexamining taxonomic ambiguous asteroids in an attempt to prove nonuniform surface composition by studying these asteroids throughout a complete rotation.

About the presenter:   Tyler Linder is a NASA funded astronomer who operates a group of telescopes at Cerro-Tololo InterAmerican Observatory (CTIO) to conduct astrometric measurements of Near Earth Asteroids. Tyler earned his B.S. in physics from Eastern Illinois University in 2012 and was in the U.S. Navy from 2004-2008.
