Colloquium Series Continues with Prof. Steven Freeland on April 24th
The Spring 2017 Space Studies Colloquium Series focuses on leveraging technologies and infrastructures developed for past, present, and future NASA asteroid missions, and will feature several leading experts in this field. The fifth presentation in this series will feature Prof. Steven Freeland, Professor of International Law for the School of Law at Western Sydney University in Penrith, Australia.
Presentation Title: “Common Heritage, not Common Law: The Legal Regulation of Natural Resource Exploitation in Outer Space”

Time: 7:00 p.m. (Central time) Note time change. Prof. Freeland will be presenting remotely. His presentation and chat session will be combined.
Location: Clifford Hall, Room 521 (Due to limited seating, enrolled students have priority. Remaining seats filled on a first come, first served basis, with overflow seating in the SpSt Library.)
About the topic: This presentation will be a brief run-down of historical developments in international space law, the reasons why international law-making is now difficult and the challenges this poses in the face of rapidly expanding technology, an analysis of how the existing framework anticipates the management of natural resource exploitation in outer space, a reconciliation of (seemingly inconsistent) relevant principles regarding celestial body exploitation, the implications of recent national law developments, and a suggestion for the most appropriate path forward.
About the speaker: Prof. Steven Freeland is Professor of International Law at Western Sydney University, Australia, where he teaches both postgraduate and undergraduate students, and supervises PhD students. He has a number of other academic appointments at various international universities. He sits on the editorial and advisory boards for a number of international space journals, as well as a book series entitled Studies in Space Law. He has authored approximately 300 publications on various aspects of International Law and has been invited to present over 800 expert commentaries by national and international media outlets worldwide on a wide range of legal and geopolitical issues. He is also a frequent invited speaker at national and international conferences.
