Glassheim essay contest entries due Nov. 15

UND’s Institute for Philosophy in Public Life is pleased to announce its first annual essay contest, the  Eliot Glassheim essay award on capitalism and the public good.

This year’s question is “What’s the difference between self-interest and greed?”

Deadline is Nov. 15, and the contest is open to all UND juniors (full or part time). Prize is a $500 scholarship.

Essays must be original, never published, and be between 1,500 and 2,000 words. While the essays should be scholarly and thoughtful, they should be written for a general audience and not a classroom setting.

By establishing this award, Dr. Glassheim hopes to encourage critical analysis of capitalism’s claims, especially: whether there is such a thing as a self-regulating “market” based on self-interest; whether corporate capitalism functions by different rules than small scale capitalism; and whether unregulated capitalism is good for the economy, the environment, and the common good.

Questions about the contest should be sent to mailto:ippl@und.edu . Visit www.philosophyinpubliclife.org for more details.
