A UND accounting class is collecting coats and other winter garments for Spirit Lake Reservation.

As temperatures decrease, the need for winter clothing on the Spirit Lake Reservation increases. A study by Cankdeska Cikana Community College, “Spirit Lake Nation Comprehensive Community Assessment 2015,” found 24 percent of participants reported a household of income of less than $5,000; 56 percent under $20,000, making it difficult to afford winter clothing necessities.

A class at the College of Business & Public Administration taught by Michael Hendrickson, adjunct professor in Accountancy is collecting coats and other winter gear through Oct. 25 for donation. This is the fourth year the class has collected winter garments for those in need.

“The idea is to collect coats for people who need them,” said Hendrickson, “Especially our American Indian brothers and sisters.”

In 2015, Hendrickson’s class collected over 600 winter clothing items. They divided up the garments up between Spirit Lake Reservation (N.D.) and Pine Ridge Reservation (S.D.). This year, the class decided to only donate to Spirit Lake. “It’s close and we have students from Devils Lake. There’s more of a connection there,” said Hendrickson.

The class plans to continue collecting items through Tuesday, Oct. 25. “Any kind of warm garment is what we’re interested in,” said Hendrickson. “Anything that’s warm, hooded sweatshirts, stocking caps, children’s garments; You know, these little kids, you want to make sure they’re staying warm,” he added.

If you would like to donate, you can drop items off at the College of Business & Public Administration Accounting Office (Gamble Hall Room 220). There are also other collection sites on campus.
