April 5: Meet, Eat, and Learn focuses on violence in Bakken

The April 5 Meet Eat and Learn will feature Elizabeth (Liz) Legerski at noon in the Loading Dock, Memorial Union.

The Bakken region of North Dakota has experienced tremendous population growth over the last 10 years due to advances in hydraulic fracturing. In 2014 a team of researchers at UND was awarded a three-year grant from the National Institute of Justice to explore the impact of oil development on domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking in the Bakken.

In this presentation Dr. Liz Legerski will describe some of their main findings from this project. In particular, she will describe: 1) what data from law enforcement and service providers in the Bakken show about the increasing prevalence of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking, 2) how a sex segregated labor market shaped the effects of oil production on women’s employment activity, 3) how population changes impacted women’s perceptions of safety, and 4) how the intersection of these dynamics shaped women’s choices and sense of independence in the Bakken.
