Oil and gas law short course offered May 8-9

The Petroleum Engineering department will offer an oil and gas law short course: Fundamentals of International Joint Ventures, Contract Drafting & Negotiation, taught by Emeka Duruigbo, May 8-9.

Course Description
This course is designed to equip lawyers, professionals in the petroleum industry, managers, executives and government advisors with vital knowledge in implementing successful joint ventures and partnerships in the oil and gas industry.  It also provides insight on the basic knowledge for drafting and negotiating contracts in the industry. Participants will learn essential information that will guide them in navigating through the various important stages of joint ventures, drafting and negotiating contracts for harmonious partnership and optimization of goals.

Instructor
Emeka Duruigbo is nationally and internationally recognized as a scholar and advocate, with a focus on Energy Law, Business Law, and International Economic Law. He has been on the faculty of Thurgood Marshall School of Law, Texas Southern University in Houston since 2006. Prior to joining the legal academy, he was a senior legal counsel at Natural Heritage Institute, an adjunct professor at Golden Gate University School of Law, a resource development associate at LawFinance Group, Inc. and a Research Fellow at the Program on Energy and Sustainable Development, Center for Environmental Science and Policy, at Stanford University.

His scholarship has been cited by state and federal courts and in a number of amicus briefs at the United States Supreme Court. He has been invited to speak at high-level conferences in the United States and abroad, including a Corporate War Crimes conference at The Hague in October 2010. Professor Duruigbo has made a number of media appearances and was featured in the international award-winning petroleum documentary film, “Crude Impact.” Along with the Chief Justice of Canada, he was profiled in Without Prejudice, the Law Alumni Magazine of the University of Alberta in 2009, in celebration of the University’s centenary. He was honored as Professor of the Year by the African Law Students Association at Thurgood Marshall School of Law in 2016. He sits on the advisory board of the Institute for Energy Law and on the Education Advisory Board of the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators (AIPN).  Professor Duruigbo received his Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Law and held academic fellowships at the University of Benin, University of Alberta, Golden Gate University and Stanford University. He is licensed to practice law in Nigeria and California.
