Douglas D. Knowlton, age 67, died July 5, 2017 in Fargo.

He was a resident of Saint Paul, Minn., and formerly chaired the special education department in the College of Education and Human Development.

He also served as Associate Provost for Student Success at Metro State, former Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs for Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, and was a former president for Dakota State University, Madison, S.D., and former Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, University of Minnesota – Crookston.

He co-authored several ND Law Review articles, a chapter for a text book (Home School Relations: Working Successfully with Parents and Families-2014), and co-presented nationally and internationally on issues of child welfare, family law, child custody, and mediation.  He was also the Director of the Child Evaluation and Treatment Center at the Rehab in Grand Forks/UND prior to joining the faculty at UND.

He had a lasting impact on both the UND Department of Teaching and Learning/Special Education and the Conflict Resolution Center.

He is survived by wife of 46 years, Sharon; sons Justin (Nicole) and Jordan; grandson Julian; granddaughter Blake; and brother Craig (Jackie).
