March 27: UND Art Collections Opening features Honoré Daumier with law, medicine and social satire

A UND Art Collections opening, Honoré Daumier III: Law, Medicine, and Social Satire, will be held at the Empire Arts Center, 415 DeMers Ave., from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 27.

Honoré Daumier was an important French artist who chronicled significant social and political issues through his satirical works. Aside from making powerful political statements that reflected his anti-monarchist views, he also satirized lawyers, doctors, businessmen, professors, and lifestyles of the bourgeoisie in general. The current show focuses on the themes of law and medicine and features thirty-four original lithographs by the artist. Two UND students were invited to exhibit paintings tied to the exhibition’s themes.  The exhibition is the third show organized on the art of Honoré Daumier (1808-1879) for the UND Art Collections.

The University of North Dakota has a collection of original Daumier lithographs now numbering 1,600 pieces. Over 1,400 original prints by this artist, dating from 1832 to the early 1870s, were recently gifted to UND from the Lilly Jacobson Collection by her granddaughters, Denise Wior and Caryn Speizer.

The reception is free and open to the public.  Enjoy refreshments and music from the era of Daumier.
