Bill Chaves named to serve on national committee

Director of Athletics Bill Chaves has been appointed to the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Executive Committee, it was recently announced by NACDA. The selections were made by NACDA’s Board of Directors at the organization’s annual mid-winter meetings.

Chaves is one of 19 administrators from across the country who will serve on the NACDA Executive Committee and one of only two from the Football Championship Subdivision level. His four-year term runs from 2018-19 through 2021-22. Georgetown Director of Athletics Lee Reed was named NACDA President.

“I was tremendously honored to be asked to join the NACDA Executive Committee,” said Chaves. “NACDA provides our industry professionals with the resources possible to develop in so many ways. I look forward to representing the University of North Dakota for the next four years in this role.”

A two-time NACDA Athletics Director of the Year (2015-16, 2012-13), Chaves is in his first full year at North Dakota after having spent the previous decade as director of athletics at Eastern Washington University. He served a three-year term on the NCAA Division I Council representing the Big Sky Conference from 2015-17 and also served on the competition oversight women’s basketball oversight committees.

One of Chaves’ 18 fellow NACDA Executive Committee members is former North Dakota football letterwinner Kirby Garry, who is now the director of athletics at Cal State Monterey Bay. Garry was a wide receiver for UND from 1993-96 and was a member of three straight North Central Conference (NCC) championship teams (1993-96) and a pair of NCAA Division II semifinalists (1993, 1994). He graduated from UND with a bachelor’s degree in social science.

NACDA, now in its 54th year, is the professional and educational Association for more than 15,700 college athletics administrators at more than 1,700 institutions throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. More than 6,500 athletics administrators annually attend NACDA & Affiliates Convention Week. Additionally, NACDA manages 17 professional associations and three foundations.
