Fine arts and humanities scholarship grants awarded for 2019

In support of the important creative activity and scholarship of faculty in the fine arts and humanities, and in alignment with its strategic plan, the College of Arts & Sciences recently awarded the following Fine Arts & Humanities Scholarship Grants for calendar year 2019:

Crystal Alberts, associate professor in the Department of English and director of the UND Writers Conference, received $3,000 for a project titled “The Other Aftermath: Trauma-Informed Teaching of the Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.”

William Caraher, associate professor in the Department of History, received $12,500 for a project titled “Global Perspectives on an Archaeology of the Contemporary World.”

Emily Cherry, associate professor in the Department of Theatre Arts, received $12,000 for a project titled “Northern Lights International Touring Company presents Then & Now.”

Melissa Gjellstad, associate professor in the Department of Languages and Literatures, received $5,000 for a project titled “Misconceptions: Infertility in Scandinavian Literature & Media.”

Brett Olson, instructor in the Department of Theatre Arts and associate artistic director for North Dakota Shakespeare, received $13,500 for a project titled “North Dakota Shakespeare presents Much Ado About Nothing and Macbeth: Unrehearsed.

Michelle Sauer, professor in the Department of English, received $9,000 for a project titled “(De)stabilizing & (De)constructing Late Medieval Reading Practices: Manuscript Materiality and Guided Interpretations of St. Birgitta’s Revelations.”

Jack Weinstein, Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor in the Department of Philosophy & Religion, received $9,000 for a project tiled “Liberal Sympathies: A Book Manuscript.”

Michael Wittgraf, professor in the Department of Music, received $11,000 for a project titled “Regional Performance Tour.”

The goals of the Fine Arts & Humanities Scholarship Initiative are to enrich fine arts and humanities scholarship, enhance visibility of the arts and humanities locally and in the region, provide discovery and training opportunities for arts and humanities students, and, when appropriate, result in grant proposals submitted to external funding agencies/organizations.

The UND College of Arts & Sciences offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs and certificates in a variety of traditional and emerging disciplines in the arts, sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Students are challenged to work alongside faculty and with the community to explore and expand the boundaries of knowledge and their own creativity. The research, scholarship, and creative activities of the nationally and internationally recognized faculty enhance teaching and learning as well as contribute the state of North Dakota, the country and the world.
