Student Diversity & Inclusion invites you to stop by for treats June 19 to celebrate Juneteenth
June 19th or Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery throughout the United States.
On this day, Union General Gordon Granger led federal troops to Galveston, Texas to announce the end of the Civil War and that slaves had been freed. It was estimated that 250,000 Texan slaves had no idea that their freedom had been secured by the U.S. Government; this is also true for many states and locations that were isolated from the Civil War. Many slave owners also withheld the information to reap the wages of slavery.
Today, Juneteenth is celebrated with cookouts, parades, and other social gatherings.
