Nov. 5: Being a Good Teacher: It’s Not as Difficult As We Make It!

Join us at the SMHS for this Educator-Scholar Session:

“Being a Good Teacher: It’s Not as Difficult As We Make It!” by Walter Kemp, Associate Professor in Pathology, Tuesday, Nov. 5, 1-2 p.m., W203, SMHS Northeast Campus and streamed live; recorded for later viewing.

Teaching can be challenging, especially when our professional training was not in education. Yet, we need not all be education experts to be effective teachers. Join Dr. Kemp for a discussion of three of the key characteristics that all effective teachers share. Drawn from two books he was introduced to at the Association of Pathology Chairs 2019 annual meeting, Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning (2014, Brown & McDaniel) and Remediation of the Struggling Medical Learner (2017, Guerrasio), Dr. Kemp will share research-based learning strategies, explain how and why many popular techniques fall short. Using his own experiences as an educator, Dr. Kemp will connect these key ideas to practical techniques that educators can use to facilitate better retention of material by students.

The Educator-Scholar Sessions are a new faculty development offering from Education Resources’ Teaching & Learning area. Led by SMHS educators who are adopting, studying, or creating innovative, effective teaching and education scholarship, they promote faculty-to-faculty sharing of teaching tips, challenges, and strategies. This series is free and open to anyone at UND. Sessions can be streamed from our website: https://med.und.edu/education-resources/facultysessions.html

If you have any questions, would like more information, or would like to lead a future session, please contact Adrienne Salentiny at adrienne.salentiny@med.und.edu.
