Remembering Lane Jackson

Lane Edward Jackson, retired power plant supervisor, age 89, died at Altru Hospital Oct. 8, 2019, after suffering a heart attack in his home in Grand Forks.

Lane was born on Jan. 7, 1930, to Archie Jackson and Pauline (Furstenau) Jackson in Walhalla, N.D. He grew up in Walhalla working many jobs including in his father’s business: Archie’s Place – later Jackson’s Bar. He graduated from Walhalla High School in 1948 and married Lois Dunnigan. After a stint in the United States Navy, he returned to Walhalla.

After starting their family in Walhalla, Lane and Lois moved to Grand Forks in 1955 where Lane began his 37-year career at the University of North Dakota’s power plant. He retired as a UND plant supervisor in 1991.

Lane and Lois were devout members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and later Holy Family Catholic Church.

Lane took pride in his family; his home, yard, and gardens; his Chief Engineer’s A License; and his connection to UND. In retirement, Lane and Lois followed GF snowbirds to Arizona a few times, and took the UND trip to Ireland to explore their shared Irish heritage.

Surviving family members include his wife, Lois Jackson; his son, Harlan (Peggy Knudson) Jackson of Las Cruces NM and his daughters, Kathy (Randy) Cariveau of Rapid City SD and Jody (Gordon) Martin of Dayton MN; eight grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren.

Lane was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert and Lawrence and sisters, Donna Larson and Irene Sweeney.
