The UND Safety Office and University Police Department received the Robert Boyd Healthy UND Champion Award at a ceremony last week.

UND Safety Office and the University Police Department have been champions in the community regarding enhancing awareness, changing social norms, and creating a healthier and safer environment.  Whether it’s providing students with pizza, educating on the importance of having sober transportation, providing safe escorts across campus, and quickly sharing campus updates and closures.  The UND community knows it can look to UPD and the Safety Office for reliable and timely information.

Over the past year, the Wellness & Health Promotion department has maintained great partnerships with UPD and the Safety Office.  A few to highlight:

Terry Wynne

Terry Wynne has been an active member of the Work Well Advisory Board for 5 years.  He has helped Work Well throughout the past couple years with insight into the water fountain and refillable water bottle stations availability to faculty and staff at UND. Along with the help of the Safety Office, Terry is quick to ensure the safety of employees at all of our events and gives suggestions to help promote lifelong well-being among all those employed at UND.  Terry is also involved in assisting the Cardiac Ready Campus Committee to verify and meet criteria working towards establishing UND as a Cardiac Ready Campus with the American Heart Association.

Lt. Mark Thorpe

Lt. Thorpe has been actively involved on the UND Substance Abuse Prevention Committee (Alcohol and Other Drugs Prevention Committee). He offered great perspective on campus climate related to substance use. He was very passionate when discussing tailgating at UND sporting events and discussing ways to get UPD and other UND staff involved with the events.

UPD Officers

Over the past year, Lt. Beland, Officer Brockling, Officer Christopherson and Officer Nelson attended the Drunk Goggles Dodgeball and the Shot Blocking Tournament events.  These officers participated in the activities, as well as provided educational messages to the student participants.  They were engaging and connected with the students in a friendly and professional manner throughout the events.

History of the Robert Boyd Healthy UND Champion Award
In October 2000, President Charles Kupchella officially launched the Healthy UND Coalition and charged Vice President for Student and Outreach Services Robert Boyd with its organizational oversight. From 2000 to his retirement in 2011, Dr. Boyd championed the expansion of health and wellness programs, services, and facilities that directly benefited the campus community.  He was an advocate for the University’s efforts to focus on the seven dimensions of wellness.

On Aug. 26, 2010, the Dr. Robert Boyd Healthy UND Champion Award was launched with the presentation of the award to Dr. Boyd at the 10 year anniversary celebration of the Healthy UND Coalition. Over the past few years the following recipients have been awarded the Dr. Boyd Healthy UND Champion Award:

Anne Bodensteiner (2016) Scotty Dunbar (2012)
Dustin Frize (2015) Kim Ruliffson (2011)
Regin Gallagher (2014) Dr. Robert Boyd (2010)

The naming of a Healthy UND Champion will continue on an annual basis, and will be recognized during Healthy Campus Week, occurring the last week of September.
