UND students perform in intercollegiate bands

Mary Morales, a student from the University of North Dakota Wind Ensemble, recently performed with the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) North Central Division Intercollegiate Band.

She joined music students from colleges and universities throughout the 10-state region of the North Central Division at DePaul University in Chicago for rehearsals and a performance Feb. 20-22. Eric Wilson, director of bands at Baylor University, served as this year’s guest conductor and clinician. Morales, a senior music major from Okinawa, Japan, played clarinet in the ensemble. James Popejoy, director of bands at UND and past president of the North Central Division of CBDNA, presented a clinic session at the Conference.

Thirteen students from the University of North Dakota Wind Ensemble performed with the 19th annual North Dakota Intercollegiate Band this year. They joined with music students from eight other North Dakota colleges and universities in Minot for rehearsals and a performance February 28-29. Kenneth Singleton, emeritus professor of music from the University of Northern Colorado, served as this year’s guest conductor and clinician.

Students participating from UND were Jacob Bendish, euphonium (Mandan); Justice DeCoteau, trumpet (Bismarck); Edison DiBlasi, clarinet (Minneapolis); Katlynn Ellis, percussion (Minot); Chris HarriSon, trumpet (Glenburn); Benjamin Helfrich, euphonium (Berthold); Walter Lawson, tuba (Larimore); Claire Mellema, oboe (Minnetonka, Minn.); Tiffany Metzger, clarinet (Bismarck); Ben Pfeifer, trombone (Jamestown); Chancellor Quitugua, euphonium (Minot); Katherine Woolsey, bassoon (Grand Forks); and Brady Zimmerman, trombone (Grand Forks). James Popejoy, director of bands at UND, accompanied the students to Minot State University and assisted with the event.
