Remembering Kim Werner
Kimberly Werner, staff member at the International Center, East Grand Forks, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2021, at home. She was 62.
Kimberly Jo Sand was born Dec. 3, 1958, in Grand Forksto John Robert and Donna (Fontaine) Sand. Their family moved many places because of her father’s Naval service. They lived in Great Lakes, IL, Anaheim, CA, Sicily and Oahu, HI, before returning to Grand Forks where she graduated from Red River High School in 1977.
She was blessed with one son, Shaun Bestland. On May 5, 1999, she married Merlyn Werner in Elko, NV, where their adventures began. She worked in office administration in many departments at UND.
Kimmy was an adventurous spirit who loved everything outdoors, and was the ultimate party planner for any event. She was a tireless supporter and volunteer for the Relay for Life and the Annual Antique Snowmobile Show fundraiser at the Blue Moose, and a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
Survivors include her husband Merlyn Werner of East Grand Forks; son Shaun (Samantha) Bestland of Moorhead; grandsons Rayce and Ryder Bestland of Moorhead; mother Donna Sand of Las Vegas, NV; brother John (Peggy McGurk) Sand of Aurora, CO; sisters Dianna (Thomas) Davis of Las Vegas, NV; Laurie (Brennan) O’Connor of Kuna, ID; nieces and nephews Brian Sand, Amanda, Jessica, and Ben Davis, Aspen and Haley Hutchinson, and a host of friends and co-workers that will be left to mourn her passing.
She was preceded in death by her father, John Robert Sand, on April 16, 2016.
“If there’s a house in Heaven and a cabin in the mountains, sell the house and move to the mountains!”
Services have taken place.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the ND Chapter of the Relay for Life.
