Remembering Ruth Holweger
Ruth E. Holweger, retired secretary for the economics department, Grand Forks, passed away Oct. 3, 2021, at Valley Senior Living, Woodside Village. She was 86.
Ruth Eileen Adams was born on April 22, 1935, to Joseph and Caroline (Leddige) Adams. She was raised on the family farm west of Reynolds and attended rural school. At the age of 12, she moved with her family to Grand Forks and Ruth attended St. Michael’s Catholic School and graduated from St. James Academy. Ruth married Vincent Holweger on Nov. 12, 1953, in St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Grand Forks. Ruth chose to be a stay-at-home mother and homemaker. Her life’s vocation was that of wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. Vincent preceded her in death in 1984.
After raising her children, Ruth was first employed as a secretary with Alden Braseth Plumbing and Heating and later the North Dakota School for the Blind. She retired in 2001 as a secretary with the Economics Department of the University of North Dakota. Following her retirement, she volunteered at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and St. Mary’s Church.
Ruth was devoted to God and her Catholic Faith. She was a longtime and active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Grand Forks. For decades, Ruth served as a cantor at the Sunday Liturgies and Funeral Liturgies and was a dedicated member of the church choir. Also, she served as a Eucharistic Minister and brought communion to the sick and home bound.
She is survived by her sons, Steven Holweger, Edina, MN, Dana (Judy) Holweger, Grand Forks, ND; daughters, Catherine (Steve) Wigness, Chanhassen, MN, Janice (Bruce) Ford, Cando, ND and Mindi (Jeff) Manley, Grand Forks, ND; grandchildren; great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sisters and brothers.
Mass of Christian Burial: 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2021, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Grand Forks, ND.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday with a 7 p.m. vigil service in the Historic Norman Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the liturgy in the church on Wednesday.
Burial: Calvary North Cemetery, Grand Forks, ND.
