{"id":1270,"date":"2022-10-10T10:45:33","date_gmt":"2022-10-10T15:45:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/business-engagement\/?p=1270"},"modified":"2024-10-04T11:42:44","modified_gmt":"2024-10-04T16:42:44","slug":"october-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/business-engagement\/2022\/10\/october-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"October 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Greetings from the North Dakota Small Business Development Network (ND SBDC, ND PTAC, and VBOC of the Dakotas!)<\/p>\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/und.edu\/dakotasvboc\/nvsbw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Veterans Small Business Week<\/a> only a few short weeks away (October 31-November 4), the North Dakota Small Business Development Network would like to take this time to highlight our commitment to veteran small business entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n<p>Veterans and active U.S. Military Members are highly skilled at persevering, adapting, quickly creating a plan, and moving into action. This resiliency, flexibility, commitment, and dedication put these men and women in positions of excellent business owners! This is part of the reason that veterans are historically more likely than their non-veteran peers to start businesses. Currently, veteran-owned businesses make up a notable 2.5 million independent businesses that produce revenues in excess of $1 trillion and employ more than 5.8 million people across the nation.<\/p>\n<p>Recent survey results have indicated that veterans perceive major challenges in starting their own businesses, listing obstacles such as limited opportunities to network, difficulties developing mentorships, and limited access to capital. These problems don\u2019t need to be major hurdles to entrepreneurship. They can be overcome with the support of programs like the Veterans Business Outreach Center (VBOC) program.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/business-engagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/10\/VBOC-of-the-Daktos-300x300-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1274 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/business-engagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/10\/VBOC-of-the-Daktos-300x300-1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/business-engagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/10\/VBOC-of-the-Daktos-300x300-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/business-engagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/10\/VBOC-of-the-Daktos-300x300-1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The VBOC program is best known for <a href=\"https:\/\/sbavets.force.com\/s\/b2b-course-information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boots to Business<\/a> (B2B) and <a href=\"https:\/\/sbavets.force.com\/s\/reboot-course-information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boots to Business Reboot<\/a> training workshops, but the program offers a wide range of entrepreneurial development services such as business training, advising, mentorship, and resource partner referrals to transitioning service members, veterans of any era, National Guard &amp; Reserve members, and military spouses interested in starting or growing a small business. In North and South Dakota, VBOC of the Dakotas is the one-stop shop for these services.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>\u201cThe Boots to Business and VBOC really did provide a solid planning base for us and give us good frameworks for making early decisions.<\/em>\u201d Lila Teunissen and Michelle Thomsen, <a href=\"https:\/\/und.edu\/dakotasvboc\/_files\/docs\/client_success_stories\/2019-success-stories\/success_story-bed_n_biscuit_2019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bed N Biscuit Ranch<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>\u201cVBOC is there to help me along the way. We have conversations about things I didn\u2019t even know I needed to think about.
