Course Description & Objectives
This course is designed to provide a broad understanding of Digital Engineering (DE). The topics included in this course are Model Based Engineering, the Digital Twin, the Digital Thread, Lifecycle analysis, and an overview of the tools available. DE has become a requirement in Aerospace and Defense contracts additionally DE has applications in all engineering fields. DE offers significant benefits in cost, schedule, and risk reduction by using modeling and simulation to rapidly design, integrate, and test, before manufacturing.

After successfully completing this course, you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a broad understanding of Digital Engineering concepts and applications
  • Develop Requirements using Model Based Systems Engineering concepts and tools
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the Digital Twin, including applications, benefits, and what is required to develop one
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the Digital Thread, including applications, benefits, and how to use and interpret the data
  • Demonstrate a broad understanding of Modeling and Simulation concepts, applications, and benefits
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the integrated Digital Ecosystem, including elements, interfaces, requirements, and benefits
Demonstrate a broad understanding of tools, and how to perform analysis to choose the right ones
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the data available from DE, and how to use that data for lifecycle analysis, requirements analysis, usability and efficiency studies, and manufacturing

This course will count towards a core elective in the Systems Engineering graduate program.
