Grand Forks Herald: Upon being named recipient of funds, UND proposes project in Underwood
The College of Engineering & Mines will receive funding through a program aiming to establish processes that extract critical materials and rare-earth elements from coal and coal-based feedstocks.

Representatives from the University of North Dakota’s College of Engineering & Mines have proposed a site in Underwood, North Dakota, for a pilot project funded by a $75 million Department of Energy initiative.
The college will receive the funds through a DOE Office of Critical Materials and Energy Innovation program known as the Mines and Metals Capacity Expansion-Piloting Byproduct Critical Materials at Domestic Industrial Facilities. It aims to establish processes that extract critical materials and rare earth elements from coal and coal-based feed stocks.
