Chioma Onwumelu and Moones Alamooti have quite a few things in common with one another. The two women have graduated from the College of Engineering & Mines, both work at the University of North Dakota as researchers, and each has a passion for spreading awareness and inspiration for their profession. Now, they have another thing in common: they’ve written an exciting new children’s book together.

Naima Kaabouch was named a Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor — UND’s highest academic honor — joining an exclusive club of faculty lauded for their excellence in teaching, research and service.

While dinosaur DNA remains unrecoverable, molecular paleontology still has come a long way, says Paul Ullmann, assistant professor of Geology and Geological Engineering.

Competing against formidable opponents from Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Ontario, the UND Steel Bridge Competition Team proved their prowess at the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Western Great Lakes Regional Competition, securing their ticket to the coveted National Finals.

On April 12, Jefferson Tester, Professor of Sustainable Energy Systems at Cornell University, will be the next Leading Edge of Earth & Planetary Sciences Lecture Series (LEEPS) guest speaker at UND. At 12:15 p.m. in Leonard Hall, Room 109, Dr. Tester will present his presentation, “How advances in subsurface science and engineering will accelerate the development of geothermal district heating.”

UND has been designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Research (CAE-R) institution through 2029. This marks the first time the University has received such a designation and comes on the heels of increased cybersecurity research projects on campus.

UND is a busy and active place, so much so that there’s a tendency to take events such as the recent Graduate Research Achievement Day for granted.

This spring, UND’s Energy Sovereignty for Indigenous People (ESIP) Global Initiative is sponsoring workshops via Zoom that are open to all UND faculty and graduate students.

On April 5, energy entrepreneur Mike Umbro will be the next Leading Edge of Earth & Planetary Sciences Lecture Series (LEEPS) guest speaker at UND. In the Leonard Hall Lecture Bowl (Room 100), Mike will be presenting two afternoon presentations.

For the 13th year in a row, UND will open its doors to students and parents across from all around North Dakota for the state’s largest high school STEM fair, set for April 4-5, 2024 in the Memorial Union.
