The College of Engineering & Mines celebrated the achievements of three alums during the annual Alumni Academy Induction Ceremony. Hosted in the Memorial Union, family, friends, and colleagues gathered to celebrate the induction into the Academy, the highest honor bestowed by the College of Engineering & Mines to alums. This year’s group of inductees include Scott Boe (Electrical Engineering, ’83), Kristine H. Brindle (Chemical Engineering, ’78) and Leslie R. Honeyman (Geology, ’69, ’78, posthumously).

Dr. Frank Bowman has been an asset to the University of North Dakota as a professor and chair for the College of Engineering & Mines (CEM) over the past 16 years. Bowman now holds the Thomas C. Owens Endowed Chair of Chemical Engineering, a title that was fully endowed in March 2022 thanks to gifts from many alumni and friends of the college. The position was named in honor of longtime CEM professor, chair and interim dean, Dr. Tom Owens.

Some who worked with Mike Mann during his 41-year career at UND remember this tagline from his emails because it symbolized his approach to conducting research and mentoring students and faculty in a manner likely leave a long-lasting impression on the University. “I think that quote perfectly sums up Mike’s impact on the College of Engineering & Mines during his time in chemical engineering,” said CEM Dean Brian Tande. “In the later part of his career, he helped build our Institute for Energy Studies and launched several new research initiatives in the college.”

  An award ceremony, held on May 10, 2022, celebrated the senior research projects of several CEM students who competed in this year’s Andrew L. Freeman Innovation Award competition.
