For UND junior Halle Landstrom, studying abroad in Torino, Italy, has been nothing short of life-changing. A Marketing major from Park Rapids, Minnesota, Halle traded small-town life for the lively streets of Italy\u2019s fourth-largest city\u2014a leap that\u2019s challenged her, inspired her, and reminded her what it means to truly live.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"Inspired to Explore<\/h4>\n

Halle\u2019s study abroad journey began with inspiration from her dad, who traveled through Europe with the U.S. Navy when he was her age. His stories of adventure and connection sparked her desire to see the world for herself. When choosing a destination, Halle was drawn to Torino for its affordability, authenticity, and rich Italian culture. She loved that it wasn\u2019t a typical tourist hub, allowing her to truly experience daily life in Italy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Life in Torino<\/h4>\n

Coming from a town of just 3,000 people, Halle quickly realized life in a major European city would be a big change. Moving to Italy\u2019s fourth-largest city challenged her in new ways, from adapting to public transportation to adjusting to cultural norms that felt completely different from home. But those challenges led to growth. She discovered new interests, like running through the streets of Torino, and learned to embrace independence in a completely new environment.<\/p>\n

Of course, the food quickly became one of her favorite parts of living abroad. From fresh pasta to pastries, she\u2019s tried it all. \u201cI\u2019ve been exposed to so many different dishes and cultural foods, and it\u2019s been amazing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Adventures Across Europe<\/h4>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Halle has made the most of her time abroad, traveling to France, Switzerland, Germany, the United Kingdom, and all across Italy\u2014including destinations like Rome, Florence, Amalfi, and Cinque Terre.<\/p>\n

Her favorite trip so far was London, not just for the sights but for the people. She and her friends met a local girl while on a boat tour in Amalfi, who later invited them to stay with her family in the U.K. \u201cIt was like traveling back home for the weekend,\u201d Halle said. \u201cHer family was amazing and it was just overall the best experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

When it comes to must-see spots, Halle recommends Spezia in Cinque Terre for its beauty and relaxed atmosphere\u2014especially in the fall when it\u2019s less crowded.<\/p>\n

\"\"Learning Beyond the Classroom<\/h4>\n

Studying abroad has given Halle a new perspective on marketing and business. She\u2019s learned that while brands around the world use similar strategies, cultural differences make every campaign unique. The experience has deepened her understanding of global marketing and made her even more passionate about her major.<\/p>\n

Balancing classes and travel has also taught her valuable time management skills. With classes just three days a week, Halle dedicates those days to focusing on coursework before setting off on weekend trips. \u201cI use those days for homework and \u2018locking in,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cThis helps me finish everything before I travel.\u201d<\/p>\n

Living abroad has also opened her eyes to new perspectives on work and lifestyle. Adjusting to Italy\u2019s slower, more people-centered pace has reminded her that success looks different around the world and happiness doesn\u2019t always come from a busy schedule.<\/p>\n

Advice for Future Travelers<\/h4>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

For students considering study abroad, Halle\u2019s message is simple: take the leap. \u201cDo it!!\u201d she said. \u201cEverybody\u2019s study abroad experience is different, and it really is what you make it.\u201d<\/p>\n

She encourages UND students to embrace the discomfort and let the experience change them. \u201cWhen it feels out of your comfort zone now, that\u2019s where the best growth happens,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Halle also shared one of her favorite travel quotes from Anthony Bourdain that captures the spirit of her semester abroad: \u201cThe extent to which you can walk in somebody else’s shoes, or at least eat their food, is a plus for everyone.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"Living \u201cLa Dolce Vita\u201d<\/h4>\n

As Halle prepares to return home, she knows she\u2019ll miss the Italian lifestyle most\u2014the long dinners, slower mornings, and genuine appreciation for everyday life. Italians, she says, focus more on happiness and less on the daily grind, a mindset she hopes to carry home with her.<\/p>\n
