UND student earns his wings

Travis Gylling’s first time behind the controls of an airplane was hardly thrilling.

He was 16. It was a hot summer day. The Cessna 150 plane was heating up inside, and the flight was bumpy. In other words, perfect conditions for throwing up.

Even so, The Ellensburg, Wash., native didn’t abandon his dream. Aviation ran in the family, and he would become its fourth pilot. He credits being involved a key to his success at UND. Arriving on campus not knowing anyone, Gylling joined numerous student groups and volunteered in the Grand Forks community.

He also became a mentor and flight instructor for other newbies.

“I absolutely love my job right now,” Gylling said. “It’s a great way to learn more and hand those skills down to the next generation of pilots.”
