Lucas Holkup to give Surgery Grand Rounds on improving communication with patients on Oct. 9

Lucas Holkup, M.D., a PGY-V resident in the UND Department of Surgery, will present a talk entitled “Improving Communication with Patients with Life-threatening Surgical Conditions” at Sanford Medical Center Broadway in Fargo, N.D., from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, 2020. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The objectives of Dr. Holkup’s talk are to:

  1. Identify clinical scenarios with risk of high morbidity/mortality
  2. Identify patient, surgeon and system factors that are barriers to effective communication
  3. Structure an effective discussion regarding goals of care
  4. Describe ethical issues concerning informed consent in acute surgical patients
