Primary Care Week to be held Oct. 10-14 at SMHS

It’s back! The American Medical Student Association (AMSA)-sponsored Primary Care Week 2022 will be celebrated at the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences (SMHS) from Oct. 10-14. Join several SMHS departments, the UND Center for Rural Health, and a variety of area providers as they talk primary care in a rural setting. See the schedule of events below.

Monday, Oct. 10
Primary Care Panel: Getting to the Heart of Medicine with Dr. Tara Mertz-Hack, Sanford Health Oakes. Dr. Tara Mertz-Hack is a family medicine physician practicing in Oakes, N.D. She is also board president for the North Dakota Academy of Family Physicians. Hear Dr. Mertz-Hack describe how primary care is truly the heart of medicine, some common myths about primary care, and what you can be doing in medical school to set yourself up for a successful primary care career.

Community Meet and Greet: Come and “meet and greet” our healthcare facilities from all over North Dakota! Learn about various healthcare job opportunities in both rural and urban settings, and make connections with future potential employers! Lunch provided by the Center for Rural Health.

Wednesday, Oct. 12
Sanford Community Paramedic Program: Community paramedic programs are integrated, multi-disciplinary programs that take advantage of non-traditional opportunities to provide care to patients in an out-of-hospital setting. These programs help to reduce costs for the medical center and third-party payers, while improving patient satisfaction.

Summer Opportunities Luncheon: Hear first-hand experiences from second-year students about the summer programs and opportunities available to phase-one (first-year) medical students, including rural experiences, research, medical trips abroad, and more. Lunch provided by the North Dakota Rural Health Association.

Medical Resident Panel: Come and hear from a variety of primary care residents as they share stories and experiences from their time preparing for and entering medical residency.
