John Bassett to discuss hepatic encephalopathy at next Neurology Grand Rounds on March 28

For the next Neurology Grand Rounds, from 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 28, John Bassett, M.D., will present “Hepatic encephalopathy.” The meeting will be held in person at the Brain & Spine Clinic, 2301 25th St. S. in Fargo, Conf. Rm. 1 and Room SMCF6A, and via Webex (Meeting no./access code: 2438 144 0197  |  Password: 2ZgekzY82tF).

Key Point(s):

  • Hepatic encephalopathy prevalence usually corresponds with the degree of liver dysfunction.
  • High ammonia in the setting of chronic liver disease provides no additional diagnostic, staging, or prognostic value.
  • It is critical to differentiate hepatic encephalopathy from chronic neurodegenerative disorders (Alzheimer’s, small vessel vascular disease, etc.).
