Ronovan Ottenbacher to discuss integrative medicine at Psychiatry Grand Rounds on Nov. 20

For the next Psychiatry Grand Rounds, Ronovan Ottenbacher, M.D., FACP, will present “Integrative Medicine: Bringing the Patient and Joy back to the Center of Mental Health.” Dr. Ottenbacher is the deputy chief health informatics officer with the Fargo VA Healthcare System and VA site director and clinical assistant professor with UND’s Department of Internal Medicine. The session will be held from 12:10 p.m. to 1:10 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 20, via Zoom.

Upon completion of this program, the learner will be able to:

  • Review integrative medicine conceptually and improve understanding of how it applies to mental health.
  • Demonstrate communication techniques to make the patient the focus of medical care, including shared goals for what matters to the patient and what they want for their health.
  • Discuss the difference between disease-focused care and patient-centric care, along the tenets of mission, aspiration, purpose, and/or mind, body, spirit.
  • Develop skills and tools to improve efficiency and document information in the electronic medical record.
  • Discuss how acupuncture, specifically Battlefield acupuncture, can be effective for pain reduction, mood improvement, and smoking cessation.

This Grand Rounds presentation, sponsored by the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences and the School’s Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Science, is broadcast via video conference to many sites throughout North Dakota and Minnesota and is also streamed via personal computers.
