SMHS faculty, students return from AMA meeting

Several SMHS representatives are back from the American Medical Association (AMA) meeting this week, including fourth-year medical student Hunter Olstad, who serves UND as the AMA Region 1 Medical Student Delegate and is President of UND’s AMA chapter.

The AMA’s Region 1 includes 15 states, making it the single largest single AMA region in terms of square miles. Having representation on this group by a UND medical student is a big deal, said the Chair of UND’s Department of Family & Community Medicine, Dr. David Schmitz, who attended the meeting with Olstad and Dr. Misty Anderson of the North Dakota Medical Association.

“It was great to be seated in the AMA House of Delegates this session next to a UND student,” said Schmitz. “Region 1 of the Medical Student Section of the AMA represents a very large area of the United States. It was amazing.”

Both Olstad and Dr. Anderson hail from Valley City, N.D., added Schmitz.

“Misty is a great teacher and colleague, and also serves on the North Dakota Board of Medicine,” he said. “She does a lot!”
