Small habits, safer spaces
Welcome to the new Safety Corner series in For Your Health, brought to you by the SMHS facilities team.
Today’s topic is “Small habits, safer spaces.” Safety isn’t a once-a-year training — it’s a set of habits we practice every day. This month’s Safety Corner is a quick refresher on the basics that keep our spaces, and the people in them, safe. Remember the following:
- Wear your PPE, every time. Lab coats, safety glasses, and gloves aren’t optional extras — they’re your first line of defense. Make sure your PPE fits properly and is appropriate for the task at hand, and never skip it “just for a minute.”
- Label and store chemicals properly. Every container should be clearly labeled with its contents, concentration, and date received or prepared. Store chemicals according to compatibility, not just alphabetically, and keep aisles and emergency equipment unobstructed.
- Keep your workspace tidy. Clutter is one of the most common causes of accidents. Clean as you go, dispose of waste in the correct containers, and don’t let equipment or materials pile up on benches or floors.
- Know your emergency equipment. Take a moment to locate the nearest eyewash station, safety shower, fire extinguisher, and spill kit in your space. In an emergency, seconds matter — don’t wait until you need them to find out where they are.
- Speak up. If you notice a hazard, a near miss, or something that doesn’t look right, report it. Every incident — even a small one — is a chance to prevent a bigger one.
