The project encourages and supports those students to dive deeper into the health issues facing the communities they\u2019re serving and provide information on those issues or specific preventable health conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Third-year medical student Blair Stewig, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/med.und.edu\/admissions\/rome\/index.html\">Rural Opportunities in Medical Education<\/a>\u00a0(ROME) student stationed at Unity Medical Center in Grafton, N.D., is the latest student to see her writing published.<\/p>\n<p>This week, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcrecord.com\/\"><em>Walsh County Record<\/em><\/a> published the <em>second<\/em> of Stewig\u2019s two recent articles <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.nd.gov\/sites\/www\/files\/documents\/stewig_radon_finaldraft_2.26.2025.pdf\">\u201cInvisible harm: Radon exposure can lead to lung cancer,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0which alerts readers to the prevalence of radon in North Dakota and the connection between radon, cigarette smoking, and cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Stewig&#8217;s first story,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndrha.org\/trhe\/articles\/breast-cancer-prevention-and-detection\">\u201cPink with Purpose: Breast Cancer Prevention and Early Detection,\u201d<\/a> ran in the Grafton and Park River newspapers late last year. She was actually contacted by the North Dakota Tobacco Prevention and Control Program about writing the radon story as a direct result of her (earlier) breast cancer article.<\/p>\n<p>The TRHE program is the brainchild of David Schmitz, M.D., Chair the SMHS Department of Family and Community Medicine, and is supported by the UND Center for Rural Health and the North Dakota Rural Health Association.<\/p>\n<p>Kay Miller Temple, M.D., a writer for the CRH <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ruralhealthinfo.org\/\">Rural Health Information Hub<\/a>\u00a0(RHIhub), serves as the writing advisor for the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce invited to write a specific article, Blair asked for assistance with writing that story,\u201d said Temple, who met with CRH Workforce Specialist Stacy Kusler and Kara Backer of the North Dakota Tobacco Prevention and Control Program about writing the proposed article. \u201cWe agreed that I\u2019d advise Blair on the writing, and the tobacco quitting leaders would provide the expert review of the final story and connect with the area newspaper editors regarding publication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Which Stewig and Backer did, to great success.<\/p>\n<p>Excellent work, everyone!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Debuting in 2017, the UND\u00a0Center for Rural Health\u2019s\u00a0(CRH)\u00a0Targeted Rural Health Education (TRHE) program charges medical students and other School of Medicine &amp; Health Sciences students with writing a plain language health information article to be published in a rural newspaper where students are completing their rotation.
