{"id":6818,"date":"2021-02-11T13:58:13","date_gmt":"2021-02-11T19:58:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/for-your-health\/?p=6818"},"modified":"2021-02-11T16:28:57","modified_gmt":"2021-02-11T22:28:57","slug":"und-pathology-professor-identifies-a-novel-biomarker-for-cancer-using-digital-pathology-and-the-kaiso-protein","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/for-your-health\/2021\/02\/11\/und-pathology-professor-identifies-a-novel-biomarker-for-cancer-using-digital-pathology-and-the-kaiso-protein\/","title":{"rendered":"UND pathology professor identifies a novel biomarker for cancer using &#8216;digital pathology&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6820 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/for-your-health\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/02\/singhal.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"477\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/for-your-health\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/02\/singhal.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/for-your-health\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/02\/singhal-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/for-your-health\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/02\/singhal-768x458.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/for-your-health\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/02\/singhal-600x358.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/for-your-health\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/02\/singhal-200x118.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>Sandeep Singhal, Ph.D., assistant professor in the UND School of Medicine &amp; Health Sciences Department of Pathology, basic research scholar of the <a href=\"https:\/\/med.und.edu\/daccota\/index.html\">DaCCoTA<\/a>,\u00a0and director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/ndinbre.org\/\">IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence<\/a> (INBRE) bioinformatics division,\u00a0recently published a paper in\u00a0<em>Communications Biology &#8211; Nature<\/em>, one of the world\u2019s leading journals in the natural sciences, on a potential novel biomarker for cancer.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s42003-021-01651-y\">paper<\/a>, which explored the use of digital pathology to profile the subcellular distribution of the transcriptional regulator protein Kaiso (ZBTB33) in breast tumors from American women, found new connections between Kaiso and the autophagy-related proteins LC3A and LC3B, &#8220;that are associated with features of the tumor immune microenvironment, survival, and race.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>These findings make Kaiso a possible biomarker for\u00a0breast cancer risk management and predictor of\u00a0progression.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Precision medicine is an emerging practice of medicine that combines genomics, big data analytics, and population health to produce targeted therapies and guide decisions made in regard to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease,\u00a0for cancer in particular,&#8221; explained Singhal. &#8220;Racial diversity is tied to both our genetics and our environment, which is why we attempt to link genetics, ancestry, and disease, particularly when race is described in terms of continent of origin.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This is why Singhal and his team sought to leverage &#8220;Artificial Intelligence-based\u00a0automated image analysis algorithms&#8221; to the subcellular distribution of Kaiso in a racially diverse cohort of breast cancer patients.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We found that both nuclear and cytoplasmic Kaiso proteins are associated with breast cancer outcomes, and each are independent predictors of overall breast cancer survival,&#8221; Singhal said. &#8220;Specifically, patients stratified by nuclear and cytoplasmic Kaiso are enriched in cell stress and immune response, which differentially predict survival based on genetic ancestry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The general findings presented in Singhal\u2019s study highlight Kaiso\u2019s potential as a predictive biomarker to guide future treatment decisions, particularly in the use of immunotherapy.<\/p>\n<p>These results pave the way for future applications in prospective studies where profiles of nuclear and cytoplasmic Kaiso can be evaluated in clinical trials as both a predictive and prognostic breast cancer biomarker.
