{"id":6959,"date":"2021-03-11T16:12:06","date_gmt":"2021-03-11T22:12:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/for-your-health\/?p=6959"},"modified":"2021-03-11T16:18:42","modified_gmt":"2021-03-11T22:18:42","slug":"smhs-grad-students-win-awards-at-unds-annual-graduate-research-achievement-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/for-your-health\/2021\/03\/11\/smhs-grad-students-win-awards-at-unds-annual-graduate-research-achievement-day\/","title":{"rendered":"SMHS grad students win awards at UND&#8217;s annual Graduate Research Achievement Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_MsoNoSpacing\">Congratulations are in order to Danielle Germundson and\u00a0Sonalika Singhal, graduate students in Clinical &amp; Translational Sciences, who won first and third place, respectively, in the natural sciences category at UND&#8217;s fifth annual (virtual)\u00a0Graduate Research Achievement Day (GRAD) event last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNoSpacing\">&#8220;Graduate students are really the lifeblood of any research university; they are the intellectual fuel that drives the research engine forward,&#8221; said Chris Nelson, associate dean in UND&#8217;s School of Graduate Studies. &#8220;The high quality of research on display by all of our presenters was apparent in the very high ratings received.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Germundson&#8217;s presentation was entitled &#8220;Food for thought: Brain pathology changes in a mouse model of mild milk allergy&#8221; and Singhal gave a poster called &#8220;Bladder Cancer risk prediction model for human exposed to arsenic: Gene expression analysis.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Both students are conducting research within the SMHS Department of Pathology.<\/p>\n<p>GRAD was started in 2017 with four goals in mind, Nelson said. Organizers wanted to encourage collaboration between disciplines, give students a place where they could showcase about their work, \u201cEnhance Discovery at a Level Consistent with Most Research-Intensive Communities\u201d (see Goal 4 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/und.edu\/about\/mission\/strategic-plan.html\">UND Strategic Plan<\/a>) and show the community the exceptional range of UND graduate students\u2019 research.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Congratulations are in order to Danielle Germundson and\u00a0Sonalika Singhal, graduate students in Clinical &amp;
