MS3: Policies, procedures, ERAS

The Office of Student Affairs & Admissions has links to “Procedures” under the “Policies and Procedures” tab in the Medical Student Handbook link on the SAA web site. The current procedures listed on this site may be of interest to students currently on their clinical rotations as they pertain to away rotations, step examinations, residency applications, and interview cycles. Please take a look. There are more procedures to come and we always welcome your suggestions.

ERAS Information from Cindy Stromme–Cindy created ERAS tokens for the rising MS3s on June 19t. You should have received an email from AAMC that contains your token. Check your spam folder if you did not receive it.

Follow the directions in the email to register the token through ERAS. As a third-year student, you are only allowed to update the personal information section. The rest of the application material will become active the following season, typically in June before your senior year. Registering the token now will give you access to the LoRP (letter of recommendation portal) and allow you to request letters of recommendations (LORs) from your letter writers so that they may upload them to ERAS throughout your third-year clerkships.

Finally, get to know your preceptors, they will write your letters of recommendation. Also, think about this when you are on rotation–

  • It is easier to ask for letters of recommendation while on the clerkship.
  • Give your potential letter writer a CV and a personal statement at the time that you ask.
  • Make sure to ask if they feel that they can write you a good letter of recommendation.
  • You cannot see your letters of recommendation; it is against the rules and could lead to sanctions.
