{"id":1752,"date":"2026-01-21T12:19:35","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T18:19:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/grand-rounds\/?p=1752"},"modified":"2026-01-21T14:00:46","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T20:00:46","slug":"financial-aid-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/grand-rounds\/2026\/01\/financial-aid-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Financial aid news"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Trimester 3 disbursements<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Class of 2029: Disbursement will begin February 23, 2026<\/li>\n<li>Class of 2028: Disbursement will begin February 23, 2026<\/li>\n<li>Class of 2027: Disbursement will begin February 23, 2026<\/li>\n<li>Class of 2026: Disbursement will begin January 26, 2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Last date to pay Trimester 3 Tuition to avoid a late fee is April 15, 2026.<\/p>\n<h3>Important federal student loan changes \u2013 What you need to know<\/h3>\n<h4>Graduate PLUS loan program eliminated<\/h4>\n<p>Starting July 1, 2026, the Graduate PLUS loan program will be discontinued. However, borrowers with a Federal Direct Loan made <strong>(disbursed)<\/strong> before July 1, 2026, while enrolled in a credentialed program, can borrow from the GradPLUS Program for 3 academic years or the remainder of their expected time to credential, whichever is less.<\/p>\n<h4>New loan limits introduced<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Annual Limits<\/strong>: $20,500\/year for graduate students and $50,000\/year for professional students<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aggregate Limits<\/strong>: $100,000 total for graduate students and $200,000 total for professional students<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lifetime Borrowing Cap<\/strong>: $257,500 for all federal loans combined (excluding Parent PLUS loans)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These limits take effect on July 1, 2026. However, if you are a current borrower, you will be able to borrow under current rules for the remainder of your program.<\/p>\n<h4>Two repayment options for new borrowers (post-2026)<\/h4>\n<p>Borrowers with new loans made on or after July 1, 2026, can be repaid using only two plans:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A new <strong>Standard Repayment Plan<\/strong> with fixed payments (10\u201325 year terms)<\/li>\n<li>A new income-driven plan called <strong>RAP (Repayment Assistance Plan)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Current borrowers with no new loans made on or after July 1, 2026 are eligible to enroll in the current Standard, Graduated, Extended, or Income-Based (IBR) repayment plans, and can also choose the new RAP.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: Borrowers on ICR, PAYE, or SAVE must transition to a new plan by July 1, 2028. If no selection is made, they will be automatically placed into RAP.<\/p>\n<h4>RAP details<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Minimum monthly payment: <strong>$10<\/strong>, based on Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) and number of dependents.<\/li>\n<li>For married borrowers filing separately, <span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\"> spouse\u2019s AGI and number of dependents are not included in payment calculation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>You can switch from RAP to the Standard plan at any time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>IBR updates<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Partial financial hardship is no longer required.<\/li>\n<li>Loan forgiveness after 25 years of qualifying payments remains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Additional changes<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Economic Hardship Deferment<\/strong> and <strong>Unemployment Deferment<\/strong> will be <strong>eliminated<\/strong> for loans disbursed on or after July 1, 2027.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF)<\/strong> will count time spent in medical or dental internships and residency programs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We understand these changes may raise questions.
