If not, one of your colleagues probably has. In the last few years, scoping and systematic reviews have experienced a bit of a moment (<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.jclinepi.2021.05.022\">Hoffman 2021<\/a>) in the medical and health sciences research literature, and while guidelines and reporting protocols are standardized and accessible (The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nap.edu\/catalog\/13059\/finding-what-works-in-health-care-standards-for-systematic-reviews\">Institute of Medicine<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cochrane.org\/handbook\">Cochrane Collaboration<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/inst\/crd\/pdf\/Systematic_Reviews.pdf\">Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (University of York)<\/a>, and other organizations each have their own recommendations on conducting a systematic or scoping review, nonstandard reviews proliferate, making it difficult for a novice researcher to learn the methodology.<\/p>\n<h2>Key Themes<\/h2>\n<p>In response, this past June we hosted two panels of SMHS faculty with experience in scoping and systematic reviews. Sessions were not recorded in order to facilitate more open dialogue, however, definite themes emerged as panelists discussed their own experience navigating these reviews:<\/p>\n<h3>Collaboration<\/h3>\n<p>Collaboration is key: Having formalized roles for all members of your team, as well as one or two members with experience conducting scoping or systematic reviews, is valuable. However, each team will need to find its own equilibrium, and thinking deeply about skills and roles, and communicating clearly about expectations and timelines will directly impact the success of your project. Participating in a review can be a meaningful experience for a student, but engaged mentorship is necessary. Finally, including a librarian as a collaborator and possibly co-author is both best practice globally as well as appreciated by our librarians here at SMHS.<\/p>\n<h3>Tools<\/h3>\n<p>Tools are worth the investment: Some tools require an initial investment in training time, but all panelists agreed that they are worth the effort, with some highlighting free tools like Rayyan, and others sharing their experience with paid tools like Covidence.<\/p>\n<h3>Grey Areas<\/h3>\n<p>Some grey areas remain: The role of grey literature searches within reviews is nuanced. In some disciplines, much cutting-edge research is first published in policy briefs or whitepapers rather than journal articles, and some populations and epistemologies remain excluded from Western research literature, and can only be retrieved via grey literature searching.<\/p>\n<h3>Future Topics<\/h3>\n<p>All of the above themes are fertile ground for their very own workshop, and we plan to explore these further aspects of conducting scoping and systematic reviews in future sessions; stay tuned for more information, and let us know if there are particular sub-topics you\u2019d like to explore.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on reviews, see our <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.und.edu\/scholarly_publishing\/systematicreviews\">Guide to Scoping and Systematic Reviews<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/med.und.edu\/library\/contact_us.html\">contact your librarian directly.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Thank you, panelists!<\/h2>\n<p>Finally, we would like to thank our panelists.
