Rural communities are complex systems, much more so than many people think. They are not simply smaller, remote versions of urban environments. As a school of medicine in a rural state, the UND SMHS actively recruits students who come from rural areas. Join Brad Gibbens, acting director of the Center for Rural Health and assistant professor, to learn more about the culture these students come from, which is both a culture we want to send them back to and a culture that we interact within while trying to identify training sites. The session will discuss “rural” contextual facets related to demographics, economics, and culture. This is an overview of rural culture with an emphasis on rural North Dakota as it applies to our students, our teaching and guidance, and the success of our programs.

This faculty development session is hosted by the Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship unit of Education Resources and the Office of Education and Faculty Affairs. Our faculty development events feature topics of interest to the medical and health education community and are free and open to anyone at UND. Previous faculty development sessions can be streamed from our website.
