Top 5 Reasons to Attend This Year’s Art Auction

Lexie Hoemberg – UND Law 3L

letterhead-01It is that time of year again: The University of North Dakota School of Law will be hosting its annual Art Auction on October 14, 2016. The Art Auction occurs every fall and is one of the law school’s biggest events of the year. This year, the Boardwalk Bar and Grill in East Grand Forks will host the event. You can purchase tickets for $25 per person or $40 for a pair. Tickets will also be sold at the door for $30 per person or $50 for a pair.

Why attend the Art Auction, you ask? What is in it for you? While there are many reasons to attend, here are the top five.

  1. All proceeds go towards a great cause.

The Art Auction’s proceeds will go to the UND School of Law’s Class of 2017. The class will use the funds to help pay for graduation expenses, including the graduation banquet and the graduation ceremony. Tyler Hedin, who is in charge of organizing this year’s event, described the Art Auction as “a collaborative effort to celebrate the graduating class.”

Additionally, proceeds help fund the class gift to the School of Law. It has become a tradition for each graduating class to provide a gift to the law school as a way of giving back to the faculty, staff, and upcoming students. This year’s goal is no different.

  1. It provides an opportunity to network.

The entire law school community, along with family and friends, is invited to attend the Art Auction. The Auction is a great way for first-year students to get to know each other better and for all students to spend some quality time together. Students also have the opportunity to connect with alumni, faculty, and staff members present at the event. This networking can lead to long-lasting business or personal relationships.

  1. The auction items are truly a treat.

Several amazing items have been sold at the Art Auction in previous years, and this year will be no exception. In the past, auction items have included handcrafted artwork, dinners and activities with UND Law faculty, gift cards to countless local businesses, UND Law merchandise, a party bus, and some delicious food and beverages. Each class also creates its own basket to donate to the Art Auction. Hedin feels creating a class basket is a great idea because it gives the classes a way to show their creativity while trying to top off the baskets given in previous years. And, let’s not forget a special prize goes to one lucky auction-goer at the end of the night.

  1. Supporting the Art Auction means supporting local businesses.

Local businesses donate a majority of the items for the Art Auction. Although the businesses do not receive money from the sale, they have the opportunity to promote their establishments, allowing attendees to see what each has to offer. You may find something new that you really like and will want to visit or purchase again in the future.

  1. It is the perfect way to commence Homecoming weekend.

With this year being UND’s 100th Homecoming, the Art Auction is a great way to kick off the special weekend. UND students and alumni from all over will be in town to celebrate the occasion. You can start off the weekend with the Art Auction, attend the Homecoming parade the next morning, and then head to the football game Saturday afternoon. The Homecoming festivities for the weekend also include many other events for people of all ages to enjoy.

So, if you are in the area on October 14 and are looking for a night filled with great sale items, old and new friends, and delicious food, head over to UND School of Law’s Art Auction! Tickets go on sale this week at the law school and will also be available for purchase at the door. Come join in helping the UND Law Class of 2017 make its graduation everything the students hope for and more.
