West Fargo attorney to run for district court judge

David Chapman ’95 is seeking the seat currently held by Judge Steven Marquart, who is retiring at end of the year.

WEST FARGO — West Fargo attorney David Chapman has announced he will be seeking election to a district judgeship based in Fargo this fall.

He said in a news release that he will be a candidate to fill the seat currently held by Judge Steven Marquart, who will be retiring at the end of his term this year.

Chapman, in his 25 years of law practice, has covered a wide spectrum of practice areas including family, criminal, commercial, oil and gas real property, attorney malpractice, personal injury, medical malpractice immigration, constitutional and attorney ethics.

The 1995 graduate of the University of North Dakota Law School is admitted to the state bars in North Dakota and Minnesota, as can practice in federal courts.

He also served as an adjunct faculty member in the paralegal program at Minnesota State University Moorhead, and has lectured at continuing legal education programs on immigration law and attorney ethics.

With Marquardt filling out his term, an election will determine the next judge to fill the seat in the East Central Judicial District. The first step in the election is the June 11 primary.

Also retiring this year will be District Court Judge Tom Olson. Because he is retiring in the midst of his term in April, a replacement will be named by Gov. Doug Burgum to fill out his term. Olson was re-elected in 2020.
