Grand Forks Fire Department and UND Communication students host Fire Safety Fest on April 5
The Grand Forks Fire Department is partnering with the UND Communication advertising and public relations campaigns class to host a Fire Safety Fest on campus.
The event will be held Tuesday, April 5, in the Memorial Union Ballroom B and C, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It’s an opportunity for students to refresh their knowledge on fire safety and to explore career opportunities. There will be giveaways, activities, prizes, and free food.
Interactive activities will include a thermal imager, which detects and images heat from objects; a fire extinguisher simulator; and a fire hose simulator. A hazmat station will give information on identifying chemicals. Fire safety facts and tips will help students refresh fire safety knowledge. Students can also ask questions relating to career opportunities and have a chance to compete for the fastest suit-up time in firefighter gear to win a prize.
Grand Forks Mayor Brandon Bochenski, UND Provost Eric Link, and Interim Vice President for Student Affairs Beth Hellwig are scheduled to attend.
UND students in Communication 430 Advertising and Public Relations Campaigns class, which is instructed by Associate Professor of Communication Joonghwa Lee, have visited the fire station and met with Fire Chief Gary Lorenz, Fire Marshals Rod Freitag and Brian Geatz, and Battalion Chief Bruce Weymier to discuss the event ideas.
The Grand Forks Fire Department has provided a budget, and students are executing social media and traditional media campaigns to promote the event in addition to organizing the event in cooperation with the Memorial Union staff. Deek’s Pizza is also a sponsor of the Fire Fest.
