MEDIA ADVISORY: UND to welcome Sen. John Hoeven in announcing Federal Aviation Administration program supporting veterans pursuing flight training

Members of the media are welcome to attend the event in the atrium of Robin Hall on Oct. 6, at 10 a.m.

What: Event will announce UND’s participation in a program that will cover a portion of a veteran’s flight lessons.

When: Thursday, Oct. 6.

Where: Atrium of Robin Hall, west end of the UND campus at 4275 University Ave, Grand Forks.

MORE BACKGROUND:

Sen. John Hoeven, UND President Andrew Armacost, Robert Kraus, dean of the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences and Elizabeth Bjerke, associate dean of aerospace, will meet at Robin Hall to announce the implementation of the Vets to Wings program (V2W). Sen. Hoeven worked with FAA officials to secure money for the program. V2W is a cooperative agreement with the FAA and is meant to support veterans pursuing commercial flight degrees. UND students who have served in a branch of the U.S. military may be eligible for funds to cover the gap in financing that comes between what the GI Bill will cover, and the actual cost of flight training.

The cooperative agreement is part of ongoing workforce development efforts by the FAA.

There are about 100 veteran aviation students at UND, and efforts are underway to recruit 40 current students into the program, as well as 15 new students. To be eligible for funding for flight training, a veteran student must already possess a private pilot’s license.

Members of the media are welcome to attend the event. Passport parking is available in the parking lot near Ryan Hall, adjacent to Robin Hall.
