This summer, UND Aerospace launched its new Helicopter Operations degree, establishing a dedicated academic program for helicopter flight training separate from the Commercial Aviation (airplane) degree. This distinction recognizes the unique skills, training and career pathways associated with professional helicopter operations, setting the program apart from the traditional fixed-wing aviation curriculum.

“For the past four decades, helicopter flight training at UND Aerospace fell under the broad umbrella of the Commercial Aviation degree program,” said Wesley Van Dell, helicopter chief flight instructor. “This new degree program adds tremendous flexibility for students already enrolled and, more critically, for those who are seeking a helicopter-specific degree along with obtaining their pilot certificates.”

This change allows helicopter operations to expand to meet flight training needs as the program grows, giving new students the chance to enroll year-round and begin flying their first semester at UND. Current helicopter students can also transfer into the Helicopter Operations degree program prior to graduation.

Another advantage to the new degree program is the separation of ground school from flight training labs. By separating the classroom learning from operations at the airport, students can continue flying, rolling from one flight lab to the next without needing to wait for a new semester to begin.

“With continued advancements in helicopter education like the GAT-HELO full-motion helicopter spatial disorientation simulator and state-of-the-art R44 Cadet helicopters, the Helicopter Operations degree is the next step in a long history of innovation to provide world-class rotorcraft flight training at UND,” Van Dell said.

New students can apply through the website.  Visit the website for the Helicopter Operations degree for more information about the degree and its requirements.
