Service in Action
Students write letters of support for trans youth.
This year for Transgender Day of Remembrance we wrote letters of support to trans youth across the nation. Students, faculty, and staff collectively wrote 64 letters that were sent to Point of Pride, a national organization that supports transgender people with access to life-saving health and wellness services.
The letters or cards are mailed in support packages to trans youth as a way to validate, build community, and express care. A simple message can make all the difference for youth who are facing challenges. We know that trans youth are three times more likely to suffer depression and 15 more times like to attempt suicide (transyouth.org). These letters are more than just a message that is sent with a care package; they provide hope, they show there is a community of support, they are life saving.
Letters of support can be written throughout the year to show continuous support. Post cards are available in the Pride Center or you can use your own to send to Point of Pride. This is a great and fun way to give back to the community.
