Alpha Kappa Delta (the Sociology Honor Society) and the Sociology Club were busy with a number of activities during the 25-26 spring semester! We began the semester with a pizza and game night at the Memorial Union, which was a good opportunity for everyone to reconnect and play a game of Clue. We followed up the pizza and game night with the fourth “Write Something You Are Thankful For” mural activity at the Union. It was great to see the mural so full of comments after just one week (pictures are available on the UND Department of Sociology Facebook page)!

Towards the end of March, two Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) students (Bethanie Parker and Ed Tortorelli) attended the Midwest Sociological Society (MSS) Annual Conference in St. Louis, MO. Bethanie presented a project titled “American Literature, Sociological Perspectives and Historical Trauma: A Lesson in Caring” as part of her work in the Sociology Master’s program at UND. Ed presented a project with Dr. Joe Jochman titled “Health Care Satisfaction in the United States” as part of a research experience class. Both sessions were a success and we thank AKD for their help in funding student travel to this conference!

We also honored four new AKD inductees (Kayleigh Buchanan, Bethany Katka, Salma Butt-Perez, and Bethanie Parker) at the third annual Celebrating Sociology event at the end of April. AKD membership is open to Sociology majors or minors with at least Junior standing and a class rank in the top 35% of their graduating class. We would like to congratulate the new inductees on their achievements in the study of sociology! We ended the year by participating in the Big Event (campus-wide volunteering event), where we did garden, lawn, and gutter work in the community (a picture is also available on Facebook).

In closing, we would like to thank our wonderful student leadership (Ed Tortorelli, President; Katie Blackmun, Vice President; Monique Jones, Treasurer) for helping to make all of the AKD and Sociology Club events this year such a success. We look forward to seeing everyone at AKD and Sociology Club events this fall!
