Richard Roberts

Richard Allen Roberts, retired Information Technology staff member, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2022. He was 66

Richard was born March 13, 1955, in Elmira, New York, the son of Richard and Barbara (Shay) Roberts. He grew up and attended school in Elmira, graduating from Southside High School in 1973.

In June 1973, Richard joined the United States Air Force. He married Cynthia Stenerson on November 22, 1975, at Sharon Lutheran Church in Grand Forks. His 24-year military career started at Grand Forks Air Force Base, followed by assignments to San Vito dei Normanni Air Station, Italy; Fort Snelling, Minnesota; Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal; and concluded at Grand Forks Air Force Base where he retired as a Master Sergeant in 1997. While serving his country, Richard completed a Bachelor of Science from Park College and a Master of Science from Central Michigan University.

Shortly after retiring from the Air Force, Richard began working at the University of North Dakota in Information Technology, retiring in 2011.

Richard’s favorite things to do were spending time with his three grandsons and son-in-law building Lego and playing Xbox. He loved watching movies at home or going to the movie theater. Richard was one of the New York Yankees’ greatest fans and would share his love with other Yankees fans wherever he would go.

Richard is survived by his wife Cynthia, daughter Jennifer (James) Moe, grandsons: Matthew, Andrew, and Dashel; siblings: Linda Fitzgerald, Sandra Peterson, twin sister Debra Carcana, Joseph Roberts, and Lisa (Dale) Tarbert; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Sue Barnes. He will be dearly missed and will always live on in the hearts of his loved ones.

Memorial Service will be held Thursday, March 3, 2022, at 2 p.m. at Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks. Visitation will be held 1 hour before the start of service. Inurnment will be held later in the spring of 2022.
