Remembering Cheryl Terrance

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Cheryl Terrance, professor of psychology, who passed away on Thursday, Aug. 18.

Cheryl was a faculty member at the University for the past 22 years. Her passing is a significant loss to our campus community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends and co-workers. They are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Per her wishes, an informal gathering to celebrate Cheryl’s life will be held at Lincoln Park in Grand Forks on Sept. 8, starting at 3 p.m. All are welcome to attend. Food and refreshments will be provided.

Cheryl was born May 22, 1968, and grew up in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. She attended Carlton University, where she graduated with Honors and earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology/Criminology and a master’s degree in Psychology. Upon completion of her Ph.D. in Psychology at Carlton, in 2000, Cheryl joined the Department of Psychology as an Assistant Professor at UND.

She taught statistics and social psychology courses, and conducted research in the area of social psychology and jury decision making. She was tenured and promoted to Associate Professor in 2006 and promoted to full Professor in 2014.

Cheryl published her research in various professional journals and presented at regional and national conferences, mentoring  many undergraduate and graduate students along the way. Within the department, she served as the Director of Forensic Psychology Programs from 2015 – 2021.

Within the campus community, she served as the faculty advisor for the Ten Percent Society, where she offered support to diverse groups of students, organized events and acted as a media liaison between the community and University. Her compassion, enthusiasm and ability to connect with people will be missed by her students, colleagues, friends and family.

The loss of a member of our UND community affects us all, and the University is here to offer support to those who would like counseling assistance. Faculty and staff may consult UND’s Employee Assistance Plan, thevillagefamily.org or 1.800.627.8220.
